Julius Burger was a student of Schreker in Berlin in the 1920s, fleeing to New York to escape the Nazis.

His Cello Concerto is a close stylistic cousin of Bloch’s Schelomo; it and the other works here, all recorded for the first time, show a sensitive ear for orchestral colour. The two songs confirm Burger’s exquisite sense of melody.

Recorded in the presence of the composer, these are all first recordings.
