Haydn: Complete Solo Keyboard Music (15CD)

Current Stock:
Ronald Brautigam

In a recent review of his recording of Beethoven Piano Concertos, Ronald Brautigam was described in The Times (UK) as ‘the king of that strange period beast, the fortepiano’, whose Beethoven playing has ‘made numerous listeners reassess their feelings about the short-breathed jangle of the fortepiano sound’. This description holds equally true for Brautigam’s Haydn interpretations, as proven by the present collection of Haydn’s complete music for solo keyboard: the extant 55 sonatas as well as sets of dances and variations and various independent pieces. Included is also an unusual keyboard arrangement of The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, published in 1787 with the composer’s approval. These recordings were originally released between 1999 and 2004, in instalments which received universal acclaim, including a Cannes Classical Award in 2004. Provided with a new essay by Haydn biographer Marc Vignal, they have now been gathered in a boxed 15-disc set as part of BIS’ celebration of the coming Haydn Bicentenary. The design makes it a companion to Brautigam’s set of the solo keyboard music by Mozart (BIS-CD-1633/36), released in 2006

BBC Music Magazine

"…in the earliest sonatas Brautigam plays… with ready wit, and he used to the full the dynamic and tonal range, so that the simplest pieces have colourful charm and never sound under-nourished. In the later works… his technique is always equal to Haydn's demands, from the most skittish of scherzos to the volcanic eruptions and harmonic bravado of the darkest and most forward-looking sonatas"

Gramophone Magazine

"…if you want Haydn's complete keyboard works in performances that totally embrace the composer's surprises, emotional highs and lows and technical demands, nothing holds a candle to fortepianist Ronald Brautigam's cycle on BIS - a bargain at 15 CDs for the price of three."

The Classical Music Collector

"People are sometimes surprised that Haydn wrote Piano Sonatas, let alone works of major significance and clout. Perhaps they think his 104 Symphonies left him little time for anything else. Haydn’s output for the keyboard is in fact very extensive; in recent years the number of his Sonatas has increased from 52 to 62 as works were reattributed. On these very full 15 CDs Ronald Brautigam performs Haydn’s entire keyboard oeuvre, the 62 Sonatas and a plethora of smaller pieces, Ariettas, Capriccios, Variations, Minuets and the rest. Covering much of his composing career, the gradual evolution of style that can be tracked from work to work gives a revealing portrait of a composer’s development. Brautigam almost always uses pianos of the era in his recordings, and the results here are stunning; the music, which can sound underpowered on modern grands, is revealed as rich with primal energy, wit, and keyboard resourcefulness. The origins of Beethoven’s thunderous Sonatas are clearly apparent in these works. But not just important, this is music of great range and imaginativeness, and Brautigam brings out all its character. As Haydn is reported to have said late in his life: "I am really just a living clavier." Indispensible." - Chris Dench
