“The relationship between the 18th-century composer Nicola Porpora and the castrato Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was creatively close and produced a series of operas staged in Florence, Venice, Naples and several in London which rivalled Handel's. Sometimes Porpora's music sounds like Handel-and-water, but at its finest, in the magnificent Alto Giove from Polifemo (Philippe Jaroussky expands the opening syllable to eight seconds of pure tone), it has real eloquence. Does Jaroussky's sweet soprano capture the elemental intensity of a real castrato? We will never quite know, but seven world premiere aria recordings here expand our understanding of Porpora's skill.”

“I’d be surprised if Farinelli’s voice was any more astonishing than the countertenor Philippe Jaroussky...The Venice Baroque Orchestra supplies zesty backing”
