This CD continues the popular and well acclaimed series of Brahms chamber music in the Naxos catalogue.
The Clarinet Quintet was a late work, inspired by the superb clarinettist of the Meiningen Orchestra, Richard Muhlfeld. It is permeated with an autumnal lyricism and serenity. String Quartet No. 3, Op. 67, was written earlier in Brahms’s life, and is more heroic in tone: it is one of his most passionate chamber music works. Both works are established as supreme masterpieces of the romantic repertoire.

The four members of the Quatuor Ludwig has been praised in the music press for their performances of Brahms. BBC Music Magazine has described their playing as “an object lesson in the art of musical conversation. The sympathy and subtlety with which ideas are passed around and developed in these lovely performances give a degree of warmth and spontaneity rarely hinted at.”
