Amy Dickson

One of the most brilliantly talented and internationally respected saxophonists, Australia’s Amy Dickson will be releasing her next album Catch Me If You Can through ABC Classics, in what is a major coup for the label.

The album features a repertoire that is both close to her personally and a wonderful exploration of the possibilities for classical saxophone, and features works by some of the film world’s legendary composers.

With classic film scores performed alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, familiar favourites come to life with breathtaking beauty and emotion that perfectly showcase the unmistakable passion and virtuosic technique of Amy’s playing.

Catch Me If You Can features John Williams’ Escapades for alto saxophone and orchestra, Michael Kamen’s Concerto for Saxophone (the score for which was personally given to Amy by Michael Kamen’s family) and one of Amy’s particular highlights, Mark Knopfler’s iconic score for the brilliant 1983 film, Local Hero, arranged for concert performance by the young Australian film composer Jessica Wells.

Sure to be a hit with film lovers and aficionados of the saxophone alike, Catch Me If You Can sees one of Australia’s most talented musicians returning home for this exciting new stage in her recording career with ABC Classics.

Amy Dickson performs with the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony. She is deeply committed to the development of new repertoire for the saxophone, and has made a substantial contribution to the orchestral, chamber and solo repertoire.

A brilliant interpreter of contemporary music, she is equally devoted as a champion of established saxophone repertoire, regularly performing the concertos of Glazunov, Debussy, Villa-Lobos, Ibert, Larsson and Milhaud. In 2010 she performed Harrison Birtwistle’s Panic with Bramwell Tovey, David Jones and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

She regularly commissions new works, and makes arrangements of existing works from other instrumental repertoire. Ross Edwards, Graham Fitkin, Steve Martland, Huw Watkins, Martin Butler, Michael Csanyi-Wills, Cecilia McDowall and Timothy Salter have all dedicated works to her, and composers currently writing for her include Peter Sculthorpe, Geoffrey Gordon and Piet Swerts.
