Alaskan mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux first burst onto the international opera scene when her recording of the Farinelli arias with the Akademie für Alte Musik which was nominated for a Grammy. “With her warm and supple voice Genaux luxuriates in the passagework and embellishments. She delivers breathtaking coloratura passages with ease, performs all manner of Baroque ornamentation while singing with verve and vitality” (NDR Kultur). This “Hommage à Vivaldi” CD showcases Vivica Genaux and early-music ensemble Bach Consort Wien conducted by Rubén Dubrovsky in poignant sacred works by Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741). The recording features the motets In turbato mare irato, RV 627, and Sum in medio tempestatum, RV 632, the famous psalm setting Nisi Dominis, Vivaldi’s most penetrating and artistically ambitious psalm setting for solo voice as well as Kyrie in G minor, RV 587, and Credo in E minor, RV 591. With this album, Genaux underscores her reputation as one of the world’s most in demand Baroque singers and interpreters of vocal music by Vivaldi: “Her coloraturas seem to be born of the wind, her embellishments whispered by the Baroque itself,” writes the German weekly Die Zeit.
